Marginal Performance

We bought this as part of a 4-piece kitchen update. We had seen the reviews and expected a nice refrigerator. Our experience and observations are not so impressive.
First a refrigerator is supposed to keep your food cold and safe. This one barely does that. We noticed that our meats stored in the bottom drawer were noticeably warmer than in the old refrigerator. We put 3 digital thermometers inside at different levels and discovered that the bottom drawer will hover just at 40 degrees despite the control setting of the lowest possible 34 F The top shelf near the door will also only reach to 39-40 degrees sitting with the doors closed overnight. After researching I learned that safe temps should never go above 40. Depending on if the system is defrosting this one will go as high as 43. I firmly believe part of the problem is a poor design. There is not a duct to move air to the bottom levels of the unit so the temperatures are not even. There are definitely areas that are cold next to where the air comes out of the freezer into the frig section. However that air is not distributed well enough. Also the sensors that control the cooling are in the wall between the freezer and refrigerator sections. I suspect they get fooled because of where they are located. Also the control being locked out at 34 prevents the owner from lowering the set point. I dont understand they didnt take into account that there could be variations in the system that would make it desirable for an owner to set it lower. As long as the food is cold enough who cares what the setting number says?
Second the lighting in this model is terrible. There is only one light source at the top so by the time you have items on the selves the bottom is very dim and un-appealing. It works fine in the store when it is empty. Other GE models have integrated LED lights throughout the storage area. For the price-point where this model is you would expect better.
If the refrigerator section worked as well as the freezer and had better lighting this would be a nice machine. Sorry GE but this should be better.
No, I do not recommend this product
